China ranks the second on energy consumption in the world while its per capita possession of energy resource is only 50% of the world's average level and the efficiency of energy use is quite low. In order to achieve sustainable development, China has made resources conservation a basic state policy, and stresses on both developing and saving, with priority given to saving. Building energy consumption accounts for a large proportion in the total energy consumption (27.46% in 2003), and its growth rate is higher than that of the total energy consumption. Therefore, the government has recognized building energy-saving as the key area of its work.Energy-efficient design for buildings (EEDB) is a vital step towards building energy-saving. At present, the existing EEDB software for buildings have played an important role in practice, but some critical problems still exist. It is very difficult to solve these problems under the design concept and framework of the existing EEDB software. With the rapid development of the applied technology such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), it is time to develop the next generation EEDB software in order to greatly improve the EEDB.This study is the primary research work of the next generation EEDB software. The aim of the study is to present the system model of next generation EEDB software and to design the prototype system of management platform of BIM data.Firstly, based on the analysis and summing-up of the new design concept, basic technology and applied technology, the study identified the basic requirements of the next generation EEDB software. Secondly, by probing into the functions of the next generation EEDB software and its relations with other BIM-supported software, the study presented the workflow for using the next generation EEDB software and other BIM-supported software to carry out EEDB. Thirdly, based on above basic requirements and workflow, the study established the framework model of next generation EEDB software, which includes two parts, i.e. the management platform of BIM data and the module of EEDB application functions. Finally, according to the model of management platform of BIM data, a prototype system of management platform of BIM data was developed after detailed analysis and design, and the application functions of system were tested after that. The testing results proved that the prototype provides the necessary functions for the managements of BIM data. It supports both the access of BIM data through the interactive interface by platform users and the development work by software designers. The study solved the key problems in the primary research of the next generation EEDB software and laid a solid foundation for the follow-up research works.
