| Neighborhood communication is a basic need in urban life, especially in contemporary Chinese society, where rapid urbanization, high-rise aggregative apartment buildings and estrangement between neighbors make it even more imperative as one of the way for residents to maintain relations and ease tension. Neighborhood communication space is frequently used semi-public activity space that is closely related to daily life. Its effectiveness, therefore, should be emphasized by architects. The thesis tries to sort out major reasons for neighborhood communication failure through collection and classification of survey cases and existing documented cases on the basis of field survey and existing research materials, as well as architectural, environmental-psychological and sociological theories. It also proposes design methodologies and other recommendations from the perspectives of space measurement, spatial sense of belonging, rims of spaces and space multivalence, with a view to designing more effective neighborhood communication spaces and providing references for future community design. |
