In the current, building energy saving is advocated in China, to which the premise and foundation are to find the status quo of building energy consumption. While the study on urban building energy consumption in China has yielded substantial results, the study about that in Southern rural areas is comparatively lagging behind. To make up the existing first data, the current paper widely investigates and analyzes the building energy consumption in rural areas in Yangtze Valley for the first time. This study carries out field research during 2007 and 2008 about the building energy consumption in rural areas in Yangtze Valley centering round Chongqing based on the task of The Project Team of Rural Building Energy Consumption and Energy Saving in Chongqing, and collects 5011 available questionnaires. The questionnaire consists of four parts like the basic family information, the situation of inhabited building, the energy consumption and the means of regulating indoor environment. The paper states the status quo of rural building energy consumption in the three economic regions of Chongqing, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Jiangxi as well as the overall situation in Yangtze Valley. The per capita annual rural building energy consumption in Yangtze Valley is about 770.09 kg standard coal, which is 2.2 times as much as that in 2004 and 1.14 times of the per capita rural building energy consumption in cities and towns. The commercial energy accounts for 36.3 percent. It analyzes the per capita annual rural consumption of energies like wood, coal, bottled gas and electric power and the proportion of commercial energies. The rural building energy consumption in parts of provinces of the Yangtze Valley is compared, too. It reveals the characteristics of the rural building energy consumption in the Yangtze Valley. The regression model of per capita building energy consumption in rural areas of the Yangtze Valley is established. On the basis of analyzing the factors that influence the rural building energy consumption, the main factors are selected like permanent population, number of home appliances and per capita annual income. By adopting Stepwise Regression to choose independent variable to fit and check the model, the influence of main factors on the per capita rural building energy consumption in the Yangtze Valley is stated. Finally, on the basis of analysis of the rural building energy consumption in the Yangtze Valley, the methods of energy saving in rural areas are proposed. It should insist on the principles of environment-concerned treatment, high-saving energy consumption and sustainable consumption. Using solar energy, methane and wood as well as constructing new energy-saving buildings are efficient strategies of building energy saving in rural areas.
