Platform-based product development offers a multitude of benefits includingreduceddevelopmenttime,reduceddevelopmentandproductioncosts,andimprovedabilitytoupgradeproducts.It is a effectivewaytoresolvethe contradictionbetweenreducing costs and meeting individual needs.This dissertation is concerned withspecificfeaturesofmultipleunits.Platform-basedproductdevelopmentisintroducedinto multiple units design.Functional modeling and module partition for multipleunitsareresearched.Productconfiguration,Variantdesignandproductfamilydesignarealsoin-depthstudied.Themaincontextsareasfollowing:1.The current state and tendencies of multiple units and its platforms aresummarized.Then related contents of platform are Introduced.After these,theresearchobjectives,significanceandcontentsofthisdissertationarepresented.2.The methods of how to develop modular product platform and scalableproduct platform are studied.Then the steps of building function structure diagramand function modular partition are presented.At last,the method of productconfigurationisintroduced.3.Products and modules of multiple units planning are studied.Multiple unitsare overall plans by creating the market segmentation grid.The function structurediagrams of Japanese Shinkansen railway vehicles are built as an example,then thefunction modules are identified by the method of modular heuristics .After these,mappings between functions and structures are developed,and the similar functionsplatformaredeveloped.4.The theory of platform-based product family design is studied.On the onehand,modularplatform-basedmultipleunits product familydesignis introduced.Anewapproachof product configurationwhich is namedmulti-domainconfiguration isdescribed.Ontheotherhand,scalableproductfamilymodelofmultipleunitsisbuiltby C-DSP(compromise decision support problem),and a set of parameters ofindividualmultipleunitsaredetermined.Afterthese,twomethodsabove-mentionedarecontrastedandreciprocitiesaresummarized.5.Platform-base multiple units aided design prototype system is developed byVC++ and SQL Server,it can achieve objectives such as data management,multi-domainconfiguration,similarityanalyzing,modulemanagementandsoon. Finally,conclusions of all research efforts in this dissertation are made andfurtherresearchsuggestionsaregiven.
