Vacuum circuit-breakers are important components in the power transmission system. Circuit-breaker performance is directly related to the overall system reliability, so that how to improve the performance of circuit-breaker has an important significance in practical applications.Of the performance indicators for vacuum circuit-breaker, the most important are the closing and opening characteristics, and the main impact factors to those performance indicators are the mechanical structure and parameters of the vacuum circuit-breaker. Determination of those mechanical structure and parameters require repeating calculation of the theoretical analysis and experimental verification. In this paper, a software ADAMS is used to kinematics calculation and simulation of ZN85A-40.5 vacuum circuit-breaker's mechanical structure, and a modification is made to improve the contactor spring connecting rod configuration of the circuit-breaker. The contactor spring is changed to disc spring, and moved to underside of insulated connecting rod. So that the spring force is coaxial with the direction of the contactor movement. The mechanical strcture is simplified by the reduction of linkage. The advantage of this improvement are the increasing contact pressure, the reduction of compression distance of breaker, as well as the reduction of the closing bound, the opening overdistance and rebound. The action of the circuit-breaker is more stable and reliable.This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, it introduces the function, actuality and the future development trends of the vacuum circuit-breaker, and expatiates the intention and significance of the task. The second chapter gives a detailed discription on the structure, performance and characteristics, relevant parameters of the vacuum circuit-breaker, and discussed the mechanical characteristics, performance characteristics and its influencing factors. The third chapter expatiates the virtual prototyping technology and ADAMS software. ADAMS is a powerful software on mechanical simulation, ADAMS can be used to carry out the mechanical system modeling, analysis, calculation, as well as the kinematics and dynamics simulation. ADAMS is also a very useful tool in optimization of mechanical system. Chapter IV describes the design process of improving the ZN85A-40.5 vacuum circuit-breaker. First, the existing structure of vacuum circuit-breaker is analysed, then the modification on the structure is given, and ADAMS is used to simulate and analyse the modification. Finally the actual test results are given to verify the advantages of the improved design.The innovation of this paper is the modification to the contactor spring connecting rod configuration of ZN85A-40.5 vacuum circuit-breaker. Another feature of this paper is the application of ADAMS software, the virtual prototyping technology is used to the design of vacuum circuit-breaker. ADAMS is a powerful software on mechanical simulation. Application of ADAMS to the analysis of contactor spring connecting rod configuration can save time during the design, also improve the efficiency and simplify the design process. Also a lot of valuable data can be got by simulation and experiment.
