In the 50's of the 20th century, Bausch Lomb from America, Nikon from Japan and Zeiss from Germany started to explore the area of zoom microscope and then all had their own products before long. Forty years later, some optical instruments factories in China started to manufacture zoom microscope. As the image quality of zoom system is better and becomes close to the optical fixed focus system, currently, the application of zoom microscope is not limited to the biologic microscope as before. The application is now extended into various fields such as electronic industry, semiconductor industry, IT, botany, and biology. The dissertation based on the project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation is to design a zoom microscope, which is used to help confocal microscope locate the target. The dissertation completes the design of the zoom microscope and it can be roughly divided into five parts as follows: First, the dissertation analyzes the zoom microscope system by Gauss method. Second, the dissertation completes the initial configuration of the zoom microscope and the optimum design of photographic eyepiece. Third, rounded analysis about the optical aberration of the zoom microscope is finished in this dissertation. The fourth is research on the method of optimum design of cam curve. The method presented in this dissertation is based on ZEMAX. By utilizing this method, we can get the cam curve and continuous change of the spot size in the image surface according to different focus length of the system during the whole zooming process. Effect of the image quality caused by the image surface drifting problem is analyzed detailed in this dissertation. Lastly, mechanical cam of the zoom microscope is given out.By utilizing ZEMAX to analyze the aberration of the zoom microscope, we can prove that the image quality meets the requirement of the project. It is proved that the method is applicable for optimum design of the cam curve of two-variable-unit zoom system. By using the program we can not only get the cam curve reflecting the displacement of zoom and compensated groups, but also obtain the relation between displacement of zoom part and the magnification, focal length, image position of the optical system.
