With the rapid development of economy, the traffic volumes of highways are rapidly increasing. A considerable number of highways in sevice are no longer satisfy the need for both social and economy progress, thus more and more highways demand to be reconstructed or widened. The highway widening is an urgent issue in highway construction in the beginning of this century.This paper starts with the focal points in subgrade widening used in highway reconstruction and extension project. These damaged phenomema include asymmetric sedimentation, asymmetric swelling and contracting, and soft groundwork the old subgrades and the new ones. Then the paper analyzes the special methods in widening, the mechanism and the causes and the influetial factors of those damages, and also analyzes the corresponding engineering methods. With the data from the finished projects, the paper makes a compared study of different methods.From the construction cost angle, it discusses these questions such as the subgrade widening methods of the splicing type by double and single side,four traffic lanes changed to the approximate six traffic lanes,the subgrade slope protection engineering and , the subgrade drainage project by means of qualitative and quantitative analysis, it also calculates and comparatively analyzes the double and single side widening methods of the xinjin highway reconstruction project.Some measures have been put forward to mitigate different settlement of widen roadbase, including shoulder cutting, ground treatment, the application of gersynthetics, and so on. From the construction cost angle, the different sizes of shoulder cutting and different measures deal with subgrade in the softground area have been analyzed.Rely on the reconstruction project of Xinjin highway, a model of FAHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is designed. Then detailed description for steps of using the method of analytic hierarchy process to confirm indicator weight and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation to make a comprehensive evaluation is provided.The method of FAHP-fuzzy comprehensive evalution is applied to comprehensive assessment of subgrade widening project for the first time. Detailed approaches and processions are systematically discussed and designed.16 factors are selected to establish the indicator system. Substantive data is collected to confirm tie creterion standards. The method of FAHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is applied to the comprehemsive assessment of social-economic benefits of subgrade widening project.
