Research On Physical Spaces Of Vitality In Hanzheng Streets

Hanzheng Street is one of the oldest streets in Wuhan, and there are hundreds of streets besides it. Because of the location at the place where Han River joins the Yangtze River that facilitated the merchant shipping shuttle, Hanzheng Street had become a business centre of Wuhan. Due to its commercial character, it had have a lot of historical districts in different feature. And few of these streets have been preserved up to now. Baoqing community is one of the typical examples. So I choose the streets of Baoqing community to study for this thesis.This paper use the sociology viewpoint and method, as well as literature reading, site investigation, comparison research, oral histories, graphical analysis to explain and consider the space of Baoqing streets and the form of the houses. On the methods of sociology, using quantitative method, which is a quantitative description of the overall structures of a society, in order to study the foreseeable social changes and people's response to the social changes of the quantitative model, and qualitative analysis method, which include participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and other information-gathering and content analysis, both learn from each other and complement.This paper study through the factors of physical spaces of vitality street, on the main streets of Baoqing community of its space form, vertical interface, ground interface and residents'structure to analyze, that attempt to describe the relationship between the space of traditional streets and the activities of the residents, in order to point out the connection of modern life culture and geographical culture. According to this interaction between them to show the factors which affect the street activity, and bring some reasonable proposals for the transformation of traditional streets.This study has following characteristics that is original study which put forth specific proposals from practice not from second-hand of information to make an indoor theoretical study. Hope the paper would be profitable for further research in Hanzheng Street.With this study, we can learn two things: first, we can observe the effect following the political and social changes from people's public life; second, can understand the relationship between architecture, street and people's daily life. Finally, hope to strengthen the understanding of informal traditional housing production in Hanzheng Street.
