Transmission lines are basic component of power systems. The inspection management is critical and effective to guarantee the security of transmission lines and electrical equipments. This dissertation discusses the intelligent inspection management system based on the global positioning system (GPS), the geographic information system (GIS), and the personal digital assistant (PDA). This system uses the client/server network architecture. It is composed of the handset and the backstage supervisor,which unifies the functions of the computer, the network communication, and the embedded technology, with notable advantages such as principle , reliability, feasibility, and extendibility. The practical application indicates that this system may satisfy the inspection task with high speed, high efficiency, and prompt request. It improves the traditional inspection manner, explores the new method for transmission line inspection, reduces the possibility of omission or wrong inspection, and guarantees long-term highly effective steady operation of the transmission lines. Finally some examples are given to validate application of GIS+GPS intelligence line inspection system in fault localization, contingency analysis, and lightning localization.
