As the communication networks and systems standards in substation, IEC61850 provides the comprehensive standards for digital substation. The standard is based on advanced communication technology and it requires higher request on relay protection equipment. This thesis introduces the background of IEC6850 standard series and the main content, analyzes its technical characteristics. Based on the character of OPNET simulator software and the devices in substations, it built the dynamic simulation models of the devices and the network models. By changing the parameters such as network bandwidth and sampling frequency, simulate the communication of the process bus and analysis the characteristics of the message end-to-end delay. Set the relay protection equipment CPU working under different utilization and get the result of the end-to-end delay of communication message, analysis the influence to message delay made by CPU characteristics. In the last, the thesis elaborates the composition of relay device communication system, and designed a high-performance communication system with double CPUs.
