Engine emission regulations and fuel consumption regulations are increasingly stringent with the deterioration of global climate and the growing shortage of oil resources. In order to meet those regulations, electronic control system has been adopted as essential systems for modern engines. The study and development of universal electronic control unit have practical significance to improve tests method and tests efficiency.Supported by Technology Innovation Fund for the National Enterprises (Development and Commercialization of Universal Electronic Control Unit (UECU) for Engines, NO.08C26224302178), study and development of universal electronic control unit were carried out. Based on sufficient investigation for electronic control systems, design idea was put forward. The idea was hardware and software resources were set as public and configured via static software reconfiguration method. Overall scheme of UECU was established. Hardware and software designs for UECU were carried out. UECU hardware consists of microcontroller, power, switch input and output processing circuits, frequency processing circuit, AD circuit, high-side and low-side switch drive circuit, bridge drive circuit, and serial communication circuit. Delamination modularization was used in software design. Static structure of UECU software consists of hardware encapsulation layer, modicum layer, and application layer. Universal modules of engine speed calculation, crankshaft and camshaft positions detection, actuators drive, injection and ignition parameters calculation, as well as control module were designed. EEPROM reading/writing module, serial communication module and host computer software were also designed. UECU was applied to a MR479 gasoline engine. The experimental results show: sine wave signal from crankshaft position sensor with high amplitude can be converted to rectangular wave that can be accepted by microcontroller; the injection pulsewidth and starting time are in accordance with set point value; engine was started successfully by the UECU; in operating condition of idle, amplitude of engine speed is within normal scale. Test results indicate that the UECU is correct and effective. UECU has high using value and broad market prospects. Its successful development will play an important role on promoting technology development of electronic control engines in China.
