Study And Design On The CRD West Beijing Commercial Convention And Exhibition Center On The West Chang'an Street Extension

Since the First World Expo was held in England in 1851, this world pageant has finally come to China's turn after 150 years. The grand opening of 2010 Shanghai World Expo indicates that China is now steadily becoming a major force in the international convention and exhibition industry, while at the same time, China's convention and exhibition sector has become one of its own fastest growing industries with great potential.With the unprecedented growth in the convention and exhibition business, there have been massive constructions of convention and exhibition centers across the country, which has raised some serious concerns including redundancy in pavilion functions, significant discrepancy in term of the scale between the initial design/construction and actual operation needs, the emptiness during non-exhibition time, inefficient urban transportation, non-interaction and lack of integration of the exhibition centers with city life. In view of the above problems, this essay discusses the reasons and rational behind the constructions of convention and exhibition centers domestically and worldwide. Specifically, it uses the CRD West Beijing Commercial Convention and Exhibition Center on the West Chang'an Street extension as an example, from viewpoints of urban planning, architecture and landscape design, it pinpoints the problems associated the functional specifications and scaling methodology of convention and exhibition centers, the outdoor diversified landscape design of the CRD convention and exhibition center and etc. These offers theoretical references as well as practical guidelines for the massive constructions of convention and exhibition centers across the country, and the upcoming CRD West Beijing Commercial Convention and Exhibition Center.
