The Shanghai World Expo is approaching while the Expo-related buildings have been attracting more and more public attentions. From the glowingly magnificent National Museum of China to the pavilions of other countries and regions throughout the world, people can deeply get a sense of the national and ethnic expression which is lying underneath those various buildings. Living in the increasingly sweeping globalized trends, more and more architectural designers have began to seek some relatively more flexible methods, such as local, regional or historical ones, to replace the weak "Esperanto" design method. From National Museum of China to Suzhou Museum, from the National Stadium "Bird's Nest" to Beijing Capital International Airport T3 Terminal, a lot of outstanding architectures with symbolic significance have mushroomed from various parts of China recent years, and they also have been greatly well-acknowledged among people. Therefore, architectural designers have been attaching more and more importance to the exploration of the conjunction point between architectural design and culture as well as the quest for the suitable Chinese national symbols with local favors. This paper discusses the use of art and design by the means of semiotic analysis of the study of traditional cultural symbols, and explores the relations between Chinese traditional symbols and architectural design practice by the means of architectural semiotic theory. In the arguing process of this paper, the semiotics-related theories would be first applied and then the Chinese traditional cultural symbols would be summarized and classified through the use of its evolving historical knowledge. Then, according to the actual status of production and construction, the relatively commonly used traditional cultural symbols would be selected to be analyzed in this paper. Through using the classification method in semiotics, the paper would summarize the traditional cultural symbols that have been applied to the construction and then provides basis for the adaptive analysis of architecture and cultural symbols. The paper would be followed by a status-quo discussion of traditional cultural symbols that have been applied to architectural design, as well as the relations between traditional cultural symbols and architectural design, illustrating the importance of whether the traditional cultural symbols can be applied properly in the architecture through living examples. Furthermore, the paper would elaborate some semiotics-related theories, thus providing theoretical support for the argument. Through the analysis of the internationalism design style and the developing and declining history of modernist architectural design, the paper would show the important role played by the geographical differences, explaining the importance of geographical design, and thus showing the huge concern for the loss of diversity resulted from redundant internationalism design style. At last, this paper would have a detailed analysis of architectural semantics system through the theoretical knowledge of architectural semiotics, pointing out the relevant elements that should be given notice in the geographical architectural design which applying traditional cultural symbols. Besides, this paper would also pick certain typical cases to be analyzed, offering deepening understanding that may be obtained by analyzing earlier conclusions.Nowadays, the internationalism design style has entered a period of saturated development, and at the same time, those architectural designs with regionalism flavors have been given more and more emphasis. In this kind of historical environment, how to handle and absorb the essential Chinese culture with 5000 years history, how to precisely extract and apply the Chinese traditional symbols have become an official concern for every contemporary architectural designer. As for this concern, it is not only an opportunity given by our history, but also a compelling responsibility for cultural heritage development.
