With the rapid development of China's national economy, the advancement of grids's alteration and power industry's commercialization, the traditional manual meter reading has seriously lagged behind the times. State Power Corporation proposed definitely that the residential electricity market should be open right now, and had established a long-term goal that "One meter per household, Centralized meter reading, Connecting with the network of banks". This thesis carries out some research and design just for the realization of the goal.Centralized meter reading is usually known as automatic meter reading (AMR), which is a new technology that can carry out remote monitoring, real-time collection transmission, and processing for customer power consumption, making use of modern communication technology and computer technology. After studing the complexity and the particularity of residential automatic meter reading systems, analyzing some existing meter reading communication technology, this thesis had found that it was impossible to meet the actual situation of the scene relying on a communication technology solely, so the thesis has designed a composite communication program to achieve the desired effect, according to the local conditions. Finally, through comparison and analysis, a residential automatic meter reading system has been designed, which based on RS-485, RF (radio frequency) and GPRS. In the underlying communication network of the system, RS-485 is used in the channel between meters and collectors; In the middle communication network of the system, RF is used for the communication between collectors and concentrators; In the top communication network of the system, concentrators communicate with master station by GPRS modules through the public network.The thesis has designed both hardware and software of the system, and has introduced communication protocol which used. It designs hardware using the idea of modules design, focusing on the design of RF module and GPRS module. Furthermore, it designs the interface circuit between meters and collectors, and the overall design of collectors and concentrators. This paper's software design is mainly for data communication between all layers of the network, including the flow that collectors collect meter date, the procedure that collectors and concentrators communicate with each other through the RF modules, and AT command control of GPRS communication. By design, the communication networks of the residential automatic meter reading system are connected as a whole, the functions of the system are well implemented.Currently, the residential automatic meter reading system designed in this peper has been put into use in Liaocheng, Linyi, Binzhou and so on as a pilot. Practice shows that the system is stable, reliable, full-featured, powerful, easy operation, low cost and low power consumption, which based on RS-485, RF, and GPRS. The system can be used by Grid Corporation to acquire meter's data and send appropriate commands, so the corporation can do these work easily by the master station of the system.It will play a positive role in strengthening power management and improving the quality of power supplying service, so it will greatly enhanced the work efficiency of the Grid Corporation.
