Compared with the earth, oceans have a higher electrical conductivity. In the magnetic storm, there will be larger geomagnetic induced current in the oceans. This phenomenon is called the coast effect. Due to developed economy, large-scale power grids and serious GIC interference in eastern coastal areas of China, it is very important for the accurate evaluation of power grids GIC to study the coast effects. This paper analyses the GIC problems of the power grids in different areas, discusses the phenomenon and mechanism of coast effects of power grids GIC, and puts forward calculation conditions of induced earth surface potential considering coast effects. On the basis, the model and algorithm of induced earth surface potential based on the Maxwell equations and thin sheet is given. Finally, according to the geomagnetic storm data measured by geomagnetic observatory, induced earth surface potential and GIC of power grids in Beihai of Guangxi are calculated, the effectiveness of the model and algorithm given by the paper are verified.
