With the improvement of living standards and scientific & technological advances, people demand more and more vehicle ride comfort, while the car's lightweight and high torque increased to some extent the vehicle vibration and noise, which seriously affecting traffic ride comfort. As the main vibration sourc, the vibration of the powertrain torsional concern more and more by the industry. Dual mass flywheel (DMF) is a new torsional vibration control technology rised in 80's of last century. The technology has matured in foreign countries, and scientific research institutes and manufacturers in China have started to pay attention to this new technology recent years. In order to achieve the localization of DMF, reducing manufacturing costs and improve vibration and noise of domestic vehicles, the main task, currently, is the localization of the DMF and the exploring of methods and theory of DMF design.In this paper, by drawing the references and combining with our many years of research and experience, we established a mathematical model of two DOF and derived the vibration equation and analyzed its dynamic characteristics. The structural design of DMF was performed according to the parameters of certain of domestic model. The structural parameters were determined, the elasticity units of the shock absorber were designed, the 3D model of the DMF was established according with the structural parameters, the simulation analysis of the attenuation of the torsional vibration of the DMF was performed, the simulation analysis the effect of the mass ratio, stiffness and damping on the performance of the DMF was conducted, the design was optimized according to its structural parameters. Through these experiments, we obtained a series of optimal theoretical value and modified the structural parameters according to these theoretical values. Ultimately, the structure, the size and the 2D design graph of the DMF were determined.We analyzed the assembly process and the manufacturing process of the DMF on basis of its structural design. Also, we described some key technology. The work has the meaning of guidance and reference on the localization of DMF.In accordance with the design drawings, the manual samples were prepared and the unilateral and bilateral torsion examinations were conducted by bench test. The results showed that the payoff agreed well with the design performance requirements, which proved correct and peasible of the design method applicated in the research. However, the vehicle test conditions are not met and can not be implemented, which should be further improved in the future studies.
