In the history of China, there are many well-known gardens. The styles of the courtyards greatly differ according to the different locations. The south has many courtyards and quadrangle courtyards are scatterd in the northern area. The traditional courtyards have abundant Chinese living culture and reflect the material and spiritual needs of people at that time. All the hills, rivers, plants and the stone carvings show the elegant taste of the ancient people and the dignified historical deposits. Both the changes of modern people's lifestyle and the improvement of living qualities bring up with more requirements to the courtyard's design which must inherit the traditional garden culture and meet needs of modern lifestyles as well. Therefore, the modern courtyards'design should not only inherit but also differ from the traditional gardens. The landscapes and gardens of the modern residential areas can be considered as an extension of the traditional courtyards as well as the public gardens. Combined with the reality of ancient cities in Chengdu, Ancient Furong City takes full advantages of the limited space and the idea of rational designs, so it has two separate spaces for the public and the private. Borrowed ideas from the traditional Chinese culture and traditional architecture and blended the traditional courtyards'elements with the modern ones, the great designers ultimately created the unique modern residential courtyard in line with the modern living ways. This paper tries to explore the integration of the tradition of courtyard design of the Ancient Furong City's residential district in Chengdu, Sichuan province and modern culture from the perspective of courtyards'construction. Finally, the ancient garden design concept of Furong enlightens the contemporary garden design.
