With industrial development and the increasingly prominent position of power supply system, stability of power supply has become focus. Insulator, as an essential part of the power supply system, directly impacts on the security and stability in the power system. At present, the research on testing the insulator is aimed at the quality of insulation, not the mechanical properties. In the country, detecting the tension of insulator is mainly in the form of hanging weights, which causes complicated operation and inaccurate data, meanwhile, environmental effect on the performance of insulator is neglected in the experiment, making detection results rather unsatisfactory.Based on the above-mentioned situation, a set of insulators mechanical strength detection system which is achieved through the host computer to communicate with the next crew is designed in this paper. Writing the monitoring program and achieving visualization in the host computer, which help to obtain the simple and convenient operation, in addition to automatically generating test data and printing test reports. In the pull control, the host computer sends command to control the hydraulic system to ensure accurate pull, meanwhile, environmental factors are considered in the experimental process, where through controlling the heating pipe and compressor to change the temperature of insulator, greatly improving the quality of detection. In addition, for system security considerations, GPRS module for alarming with short message is used in the paper, once the system fails during operation, it will be inform staff in the form of short message.In this article, the design flow and the overall framework of hardware, software is given according to the system functionality. On the hardware side, host computer, the main circuit, strong electric drive circuit, execution components, sensing devices and GPRS module are included. Among them,89s52 microcontroller as the core chip of the main circuit is selected in this paper, meanwhile, configuring the hardware watchdog circuitry and using the TLP5214 chip to isolate the input and output signal to prevent signal interference in communication lines. On the software side, MCGS is adopted as a development platform in the paper, according to the software development process, the script driver procedures, control procedures and communication procedures in the microcontroller are also designed, significantly shortening the development cycle. Among them, fuzzy PID control algorithm is used in the temperature control and obtains good results. At present, the system has been put into use and achieved the desired functionality.Finally, the design deficiencies as well as the aspects that need to improve and perfect in the system are presented in this paper. Which provide the direction for the research work in the future.
