With China's rapid development of its social economy, railroad construction is making flourishing progress. Being different from passenger-freight combined railroad routes that were mostly found at the end of last century, China nowadays, has seen new types of railroads that are dedicated to separate routes in succession, such as passenger only railroad routes and freight only railroad routes have striven to develop. Thus, in order to adapt to today's China railroad construction and operations management, as well as modern railroad technology sys-tems, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study on Chinese railroad classifications and grad-ing standards, so as to revamp regulations and specifications. This thesis provides a comprehen sive analysis of domestic and international methodol-logies of railroad classifications as well as railroad grading, examines current characteristics of Chinese railroads, referring to the Chinese national standards "Standards of Railroad Route Designing".Together with its advantages and disadvantages of methods applied on railroad classi-fications and railroad grading, considering the opinions and views from fellows in fication and railroad grading, considering the opinions and views from fellows in the railroad field, I, after an intensive analysis of study, have made my initial proposal on the principles and methods of classifying different types of Chinese railroad as well as on the system of evalua-tion index that should be considered when conducting classifications and grading of each ty-pe of railroad. Case examples are also used to assist in determining the index value of each evaluation system applied to Chinese passenger-only railroad route, passenger-freight combi-ned railroad route, and freight-only railroad route. Lastly, I have proposed the principles and methods of classifying and grading Chinese railroad. With analysis, research, as well as calculations of the issues stated above, I have underst-ood and mastered Chinese railroad classifications as well as methods of railroad grading in a relatively comprehensive scale. I have also used the methods of obscure comprehensive evalu-ation in an innovative way in order to establish the system of grading evaluation index. I have also used mathematical models to narrow the gap of determination of passenger-freight co-mbined railroad route grading for those cases when defects brought from larger human factors result in railroad grading into greater or smaller level.
