The hanging steel-flue chimney is a new kind of chimney structure, in which steel-flues are suspended from the steel structural platform at different elevation and connected by the expansion joints. Compared with the base supported steel-flue chimney, this kind of new chimney structure has both mechanical and economical advantages, in which the stable bearing capacity of the steel liner is higher and the seismic action is reduced. However, this kind of chimney structure is not applied widely and the design method is immature. So it is necessary to carry out more research on the principal problems of top-suspended liner chimney. Several critical problems are studied by using theoretical method and finite element method. As a result, design methods are proposed in the paper. The main researches are as follows:(1) Referring to the national and some foreign countries' code in which the strength design value of steel-flue is regulated, the strength design value of steel-flue is derived.(2) Through a real project, the simplified model of the hanging steel-flue is discussed, in which the suspended end is half-hinged rather than fixed or pined ones.(3) Vertical time history analysis and response spectrum analysis of the hanging steel-flue chimney are carried out by using ANSYS software, and the result is compared with the formula results adopted by chimney design code. The conclusion is that vertical seismic action should be considered. Meanwhile, the influence of horizontal seismic action on the hanging steel-flue is analyzed.(4) The stress distribution of the suspension section under self gravity is analyzed. The number of the suspension joints and the thickness of the steel liner are investigated with reference to the divided length of suspended steel-flue. Finally designing method of top-suspended joints is put forward.
