Chimney is a kind of unique construction and an important structure in industrial building particularly in Thermal Power Plants. The seismic safety of the structure will be not only directly concerned the safety of structures nearby, but also the function of earthquake resistance and hazard mitigation. At present, both here and abroad, the study about reaction of chimneys in the earthquake has two common ways, one is finite element analysis of chimneys, and the other is structural dynamics experiment. But the visual simulation system development of chimney under seismic action is less mentioned. The study on the system is very important to the seismic design of chimney, prediction of earthquake damage and operations of chimneys in the later period.In order to describe the failure mechanism of chimney under earthquake directly, visual simulation system of chimney under seismic action is proposed to establish. Developed at VC++platform, combined with OpenGL graphic library and the data files that made from ANS YS, and based on the parameterized modeling of different chimneys, the3D visual simulation which can show the dynamics properties of chimneys that subjected to different kinds of seismic action is finished. This paper developed the visual simulation system of chimney under seismic action, based on OpenGL, which is object oriented and exoteric, has the friendly operation interface, operates easily, conveniently and fast etc.Established system has the following several aspect functions:(1)The system builds the operation interface, and parametric models of chimneys’size and attribute. You can achieve chimneys’three-dimensional visual display.(2)It makes ANSYS and OpenGL language to join friendly. To realize the visualized simulation of chimneys under seismic action, we not only use the data file of dynamics properties of chimneys which are computed by ANSYS, but also the OpenGL graphic technology.(3)In order to make the view of3-D modal more realistic, it uses light treatment and material definition by OpenGL(4)Make picture transform operation realized. These operations can translate, rotate and scale the pictures.(5)It creates the function of inquiry. It can inquire the structural parameters towards different chimneys, kinds of parameters of the chimney at any positions under earthquake action.
