Construction sector imposes strong impact on environment and resourse, thus becomes an important impact factor on implementing sustainable development. To achieve sustainable development in building industry, Chinese governments have proposed new development strategies such as Energy-efficiency buildings, ecological buildings, green buildings and so on. These new strategies pay more attention to applying sustainable technologies to the investment, design, operation and maintenance phases of a building's lifecycle. However, quite a few studies have been conducted in the construction phase. Construction stage has the most important impact on environment and consumes a large amount of resources. Sustainable construction is necessary to achieve a sustainable project delivery and has becme a trend. On the basis of the established saving-construction sites and the green construction sites, this thesis first defines the concept of sustainable construction. The thesis proposes an indicator system which includes the following six aspects, i.e. green construction management, environmental protection, material resource use, water conservation and water use, energy use and energy saving, and construction land protection. A two-stage evaluation framework for sustainable construction is further established. The pre-evaluation is conducted in the phase of construction preparation. In the phase of project completion, the post-evaluation is conducted and the ecological footprint based on the energy theory is calculated. Real world case studies is presented to verify the evaluation system established in this study. Finally, policy recommendations for the implementation of sustainable construction are propsed. The sustainable construction framework established in this study is useful to promote sustainable development in construction industry in China.
