Water resource is a very important part of natural resources, is essential material basisof life existence and human life on earth and is the core and basis of the sustainabledevelopment of economy and society in arid Northwest area, especially for Hexi calledNorthwest barn. Water resource is a critical limited factor of human existence and economicdevelopment in the area of Hexi and main constraint of sustainable development in the area.Water ecological footprint is used to calculate the necessary ecological productive areaon certain conditions of the population and economies of scale to maintain consumptivewater consumption and water pollution, which is converted into consumption of water area. The concept of water ecological footprint is specific. Its simple calculation method hasbeen widely used in many countries. Normally there are three steps about regional waterresources ecological footprint calculation. According to the calculation of the waterecological footprint, water ecological carrying capacity and comparison of water ecologicalfootprint calculation data and water ecological carrying capacity, water ecological profitand loss and the data of pressure index are concluded, which is to judge the status ofsustainable development of water resources of the area. The development situation of domestic and international ecological footprint isreviewed and the theoretical mode of water ecological footprint is introduced, objectivelyevaluating utilization and supply and demand of water resources. Dynamic change isanalyzed of water ecological footprint from2002to2012by the theoretical mode of freshwater and water pollution ecological footprint; water resources ecological carrying capacityis calculated and dynamically analyzed in Hexi inland river basin by water resourcesecological carrying capacity model; the water sustainable development situation of Hexiinland river basin is further evaluated relying on some indexes: water ecological deficit(surplus), water ecological footprint of ten thousand yuan GDP and waterecological pressure index; and finally some advice is proposed by the analysis results on thesustainable development of Hexi inland river basin. Conclusions are as follows:(1) Agricultural water ecological footprint is much higher than that of the ecologicalfootprint of industrial water, life water, urban public water, ecological and environmentalwater in Hexi inland river basin from2002to2012. The ecological footprint of agriculturalwater showed a down trend. To improve agricultural irrigation water utilizationrate significantly reduced the water resources ecological footprint.(2) The change of average water resource carrying capacity is not stable, there is nosustained increase or decrease; there is a large water ecological deficit, the average waterresources ecological deficit is2.56hm2from2002to2012, the supply and demand of waterresources is serious imbalance, the development of water resource is not sustainable in Hexiinland river basin.(3) Water ecological footprint of ten thousand yuan GDP has been decreasinggradually in Hexi inland river basin from3.992hm2in2002to0.728hm2in2012decreasedby81.8%and is18.2%of water ecological footprint of ten thousand yuan GDP in2002. Itdemonstrates that the increase of GDP is not by high consumption of water industry, but thewater resource output efficiency in Hexi inland river basin. This is closely related to theadjustment of industrial structure, improvement of the water repeated rate and focus on water conservation and the level of economic development in Hexi area.(4) The average water pollution ecological footprint is mainly on the water ecologicalfootprint of ammonia nitrogen pollution in Hexi inland river basin. The task ofimprovement of water quality and water pollution prevention and control is huge. BiggerWater ecological pressure index demonstrates that water resources ecology has been anextremely unsafe situation.
