Automotive panel have characteristics of complex shape, large structural size, high precision, and strict quality requirements for surface and the press molding process is a very complex physical process involving non-linear mechanics of geometry, physics non-linear,non-linear boundary of the three non-linear problems, these non-linear integration together with the irregular shape of the workpiece makes the press molding process calculation complex. Meanwhile, automobile panel die is the main process of production equipment for stamping parts, and it also determines the quality of stamping parts and the manufacturing of mold. The Traditional design and manufacturing of automobile stamping dies includes the following steps: Firstly, to figure out the appropriate forming processes based on finite element analysis, Secondly, to design the die & mold by the experiences of engineer Then, to finish manufacturing by foam forming , die casting , mold processing, parts installation and tryout process. Tryout is the most critical process, and takes a longest time. The main task and purpose of tryout is to remove differences between the theoretical results and the actual die face. Thus the mold can be adjusted to the expected conditions, to produce qualified parts. In this paper, the principles of finite element method, the characteristics of automobile panel dies and design methods is discussed firstly. Then the roles and design principles of reinforcing rib is introduced. Thirdly, the assumption that the distribution of reinforcing rib could influence the stiffness of mold is brought. On the basis of the assumption, the drawing die is simplified, and different distribution forms of reinforcing rib was designed to get the simple finite element analysis model. Then, the software ABAQUS was used to get the numerical simulation results obtaining that different forms of reinforcing rib influence deformation of mold. The software ANSYS is also used to optimize the thickness. Lastly, a static structural analysis is taken for a vehicle door inner panel part drawing with the method. In the comparison with the actual results, the feasibility and effectiveness of the method are illustrated.
