Mineral resources play a significant role in the development of the national economy, and in China, there are more than 95% of the energy and 85 % of the industrial raw materials originating from mineral resources. However, the grade of most of the mineral resources in our country is relatively low, so lots of tailings would be discharged during the beneficiation process. The tailings pond is the structure built for the storage of tailings, which is the biggest dangerous source in the mine. Facts show that, a tailings dam-break can therefore constitute an enormous disaster for the mining operation, and the lives and properties of the downstream residents. Consequently, it is very necessary to carry out the stability analysis and prediction study of tailings pond.This dissertation takes the Yang-tianqing tailings pond as the research object, which is a new pond planned for the Yuxi mining company. Based on the measurement of the tailings'physical and mechanical properties, a comprehensive research method, including physical model test, theory analysis and numerical simulation was used to analyze and predict the stability of the tailings pond. The research results not only can provide technical support for the design, construction and production management of Yang-tianqing tailings pond, but also can be used for reference for the design and safe operation of similar tailings ponds. The main research work and achieved results of this dissertation are as follow:â‘ Combining the laser granulometry and geotechnical laboratory testing, the particle composition, and the physical and mechanical properties of the tailings are obtained, which are basic data for the tailings pond'design and construction.â‘¡According to the design date of the Yang-tianqing tailings pond, a physical model test was built to simulate the process of dam pile, and the saturation lines'change at the condition of flood. Based on these research results, the beach length and slope, the particle distribution, and the regularity of the saturation lines'change are obtained.â‘¢Based on the above-mentioned studies, combing theory analysis and numerical simulation, the stability of the tailings pond was analyzed. The stability coefficients of the dam at different height and in different conditions, as well as the regularity of the corresponding seepage field, stress field and displacement field are obtained, which can provide technical support for the design and safety operation of the tailings pond.
