Digital simulation has become an essential tool in the research of power systems. To study large-scale and complex grids, it's often necessary to employ several simulation software packages for the purpose of verification. Besides some traditional and popular simulation packages, like BPA in Chinese version, domestic power companies have introduced other mature and powerful simulation software, for example PSS/E, from western countries to meet the challenges caused by the rapid progress of electric industry of China. It becomes worthwhile for researchers and engineers to compare these newly-imported power system simulation tools with the regular ones in the aspects of component models and to develop user-friendly raw data conversion program between packages. This paper mainly investigates the conversion of simulation models between BPA and PSS/E.This paper firstly compares the calculation methods of BPA and PSS/E in load flow and transient stability respectively, and compares the data formats between them. These conclusions are the foundation of the following data format conversion and simulation result analysis. For the power flow data conversion, this paper analyzes the power flow cards and the data items involved of BPA and PSS/E and then discovers the relationship of respective power flow simulation models. A load flow data interface program is made in C++ language and is utilized as a test example to demonstrate the correctness and validity of the power flow data conversion.Further, this paper discusses the conversion of dynamical models for transient stability analysis between these two packages. With the difference in generator models between BPA and PSS/E, this paper raises a practical method to solve the problem of generator models conversion. Common load models are nearly the same for BPA and PSS/E. By analyzing the control block diagrams and controlling units of excitation system models, turbine and governor models, and power system stabilizer models, all these components are successfully converted from BPA to PSS/E. The HVDC control system models of the two software are also compared in this paper. After the conversion of these dynamical models, it is often necessary to carry out data checking before simulation in PSS/E. Thus, a method of data effectiveness data checking is proposed and tested in this paper .Finally, this paper converts the equivalent network data of South China Power Grid from BPA to PSS/E by the developed data interface program. BPA and PSS/E software are used respectively to analyze the power flow results of the network with/without HVDC models. The results illustrate the validity and generality of the load flow data conversion method studied in this papser. Based on the power flow analysis, this paper compares the dynamic simulation curves of BPA and PSS/E further. The test results show that the PSS/E dynamic simulation models greatly match the BPA models, which demonstrates that the dynamic data conversion is also successful.
