Recently, optical engine and related optical measurement methods have become a hotspot in In-Cylinder combustion research for IC engines. Visualization translates the numerical results to graphics and images on the screen, which helps researchers and decision-makers to form a clear picture of the problems faced and understand natural phenomena process. Three primary-color method which helps us to understand In-Cylinder combustion more thoroughly is an optical method to analyze the distributions of the flame temperature in Diesel engine.In this paper, firstly different kinds of optical engines and analytical methods of combustion are presented. An optical engine with the observation window is provided on the cylinder-head is built on the basis of a single-cylinder Diesel engine. Especially a bulgy platform in the sleeve is designed to prevent the gas leaking through the combustion chamber. The high-speed video camera system is completed to make up a whole optical engine test bench at the same time. To reduce the time to clean quartz glass, we also devise the equipments which can disassemble cylinder-head quickly. Then, the elementary theories and key technical issues about three primary-color to flame temperature are introduced in detail.Another part of the paper is experiment. Firstly, the three primary-color method system is calibrated. To use an acetylene flame as the standard radiation source and compare with the temperatures measured by a S type thermocouple to study the precision of the system. Then we can analyze the combustion process with flame photos and the flame temperature by the color temperature measure system-CMS-2002. The results show that the temperature calculated from the images is in the same level as in real engine. As the method can quickly and precisely provides us with the flame temperature in a diesel engine, it is able to manipulate rapid combustion process such as in an engine and offers us an effective tool to recognize the combustion mechanism in engines.
