China is a mountainous country. With the increase of population and the expansion of cities, the future development of human being is closely related to the exploitation of mountain area. This thesis studies on the design of mountain residential district in Pearl River Delta Region mainly from three aspects, the mountain terrain, regional climate and local culture .The thesis contains five chapters which can be divided into four parts. The first part (chapter I) describes the subject, background, meaning and current status of the study, and finally presents the framework of the thesis. The second part (chapter II) describes the detailed characteristic of mountainous region, such as moutain topography, mountain climate, mountain ecosystems and other characteristics that affect the design of mountain residential district. The special climate and local culture in Pearl River Delta Region also have great impact on the design of mountain residential district. This is the foundation of the study and provides the starting point for location choice, planning and design of mountain residential district in Pearl River Delta Region. Part three (chapter III and chapter IV) is the main body of the thesis. On consideration of the mountainous topography, mountain climate and local culture in Pearl River Delta Region, the planning and design of hillside house are carefully analysed respectively. Appropriate design methods which make mountain residential district adaptive to the environment are proposed, including the site layout of mountain residential district, traffic planning, landscape and architectur design. Part four (chapter V) takes three typical mountain residential districts designs: the Wanke City in Guangzhou, 17 Miles and Yun Shen Chu in Shenzhen as examples, analyzes how they are designed to adaptive to the mountainous region in Pearl River Delta Region. Finally, several design principles of mountain residential district in Pearl River Delta Region are proposed and they may help in future designs.
