With the development of electronic, computer, network, communication and embedded systems, projects for upgrading urban and rural power grids and the construction of smart grid, many intelligent distribution network terminals have appeared and put into operation. The intelligent distribution network terminals have more functions, higher reliability and stability, lower-cost higher-quality communication compared with the previous products. Some of the intelligent distribution network terminals have field control function.On the base of researching the functional requirements of switching station automation monitor terminal, combines the development status and development trend of the distribution network and the needs of switching station automation. This paper presents the design of distributed distribution network automation terminal with a variety of communication methods which is apply to 10KV switching. The terminal composed of communication manager, telemetry board, remote signal board and remote control board. These components are controlled by a separate CPU. The terminal is very flexible, which can increase and decrease the number of the telemetry board, remote signal board and remote control board according to the number of the line the switching station need to collect. The terminal can collect and calculate the energy information of switching station, implement the master remote control command, identify and isolate feeder fault, and restore the power supply of non-fault feeder.The paper mainly describes the implementation of the communication manager in distribution automation terminal in detail. It propose the system design of the communication manager, including hardware design and software design. It expounds the design and implementation of human-computer interface and ethernet communication. The software design and implementation of IEC60870-5-101 protocol and IEC60870-5-104 protocol in communication manager are introduced in detail at last of the paper.
