Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) was used to analyse the genetic polymorphism of four blood protein loci of Hb, Tf, Alb and Pa in eight yak populations which were sampled from iianza County and Datong County of Qinghai Province, Sunan County, Tianzhu County, Maqu County, Luqu County and Xiahe County of Gansu Province to study their genetic variations and differentiations. One cattle population and one F1 hybrid population from Linxia County of Gansu Province were included for comparison. We found polymorphism only at locus of Tf and monomorphism at all other three loci. The degree of genetic variations estimated by Nei's average heterozygosity for the four blood protein lcd is higher in Tianzhu White yak (0.0078) and Maqu yak (0.0036), but lower in all other yak populations (11=0.). The popu[ation Qf cattle has a higher genetic variation (0.3259) than all yak poputations. The Y h brIds1ron yak and eattlehaemeditl genetic variati (O.2?91) between the yak and cattle. The average genetic diversities within yak populations (H5) and in the total yak (HT) population are 0.0021 and 0.0014, respectively. The average genetic diversity between yak populations (Dr) is 0.0007. The genetic differentiation of total yak population (G) is 0.3333, which indicate that there is less variation (33.33%) among yak populations and the genetic differentiation is very limited between yak populations.
