The effects of irrigation after anthesis on the quality and yield characteristics of the strong gluten wheat Yumai34 and the weak gluten wheat Luoyang8716 were studied in Zhengzhou and Luoyang experiment sites in Henan province during the period 1999-2001 (for 3 years). The main results were as follows:1. The variation of the quality properties under different irrigation after anthesis. For the treatments of one time irrigation after anthesis, the highest protein content was treatment 7d and 28d; in the treatments which irrigation more than 2 times, the content declined, smaller than that of one time irrigation, that of CK was also very high for its small grain weight. Irrigation at early grain filling period could improve the content of albumin and globulin in grain, and irrigation at late grain filling period or irrigation little could improve that of glutenin and gliadin. The content of wet gluten and sed.value were large when no irrigation or irrigation too late after anthesis. But that of irrigation more than 2 times were very small, they had the tendency of the more water, more smaller. Irrigation once after anthesis, such quality title as dough development time, stability time, valorimeter value, resistance and Tmax resistance ,area, became large when irrigation too late; they became small when irrigation too much or more than one times. Soften degree , extraction ratio and extensibility became large when irrigation too much-.2. The variation coefficients of quality under different irrigation. The variation coefficients of the strong gluten wheat Yumai34 was larger than that of weak gluten wheat Luoyang8716. For Yumai34, the coefficients of soften degree(122.8%), stability time (44.8%), development time (16.0%), sed.value (12.0%) were very high, but that of water absorption ratio (0.8%) and flour extraction (2.6%) were very small. For Luoyang8716, the high coefficients including sed.value (19.7%), stability time (14.0%). For the two varieties, it's same that the coefficients of extraction, water absorption, extensibility, wet gluten and protein were very small, they were affected mainly by genetics, enviionment has little affection.3. The correlated coefficients among quality titles. The correlated coefficients among sed.value, development time, stability time, valorimeter value, resistance, Tmax resistance, area were positive and were significant, but those of flour extraction, soften degree, extensibility between other quality titles were negative and were not significant.4. The effects of irrigation on the photosynthesis characteristics of flag leaf. For the treatments of one irrigation .Irrigation at 7 or 14days after anthesis could make the decline of the photosynthesis and the Chi content of flag leaf became slowly, but irrigation at 21 or 28 days alter anthesis had little affecting, even accelerated the decline of Pn.and increased the Car.content of flag leaf. Irrigation more than 2 times after anthesis could improve the photosynthesis characteristics, but they had consumpted too much water and the water consumption was very high. Meanwhile, the effects of irrigation on Luoyang8716 was more significant than that on Yumai34.5. The effects of irrigation on the yield and water use efficiency. Irrigation once after anthesis, it had the tendency of lower yield with more later irrigation time; irrigation more than one time, it had the tendency of more water, more yield. The water use efficiency of Yumai34 were higher than those of Luoyang8716,so,when no irrigation or too little, Yumai34 could still gain high yield. The variety Luoyang8716 could gain higher yield under enough irrigation.Considering the quality, the yield and the water use efficiency, to irrigate at 7 day or 14 day after anthesis was suitable for strong gluten wheat as Yuami34 to get high yield and quality. For weak gluten wheat as Luoyang8716, the best way was to irrigate enough or 2 times at least after anthesis so that they could get better yield and quality.
