| Based on the data of forest resource inventory and all kinds of map information (including topographic map, forest type map, forest themes and etc.), the forest resource management information system was developed by combining forest management planning and experience of forest farm and forest bureau for many years. The system was supported by assistant ways of GIS software (ARC/INFO 8.0.1 and ArcView3.2a further development language Avenue), raster to vector software R2V, data processing software Geoway 3.0. The developing procedure of the management system was elaborated and some main functions of the system were introduced in brief. At the same time, applications of the management system in forest management were studied including: (1) distribution pattern of forest resource was described by utilizing GIS spatial technology; (2) based on DEM, the gradient map, the aspect map and elevation map were extracted and overlaid by GIS; (3) the plans of harvest cutting and regeneration forestation were designed. (4) the forest fuel type was divided for control forest fire; (5) all kinds of forest themes were automatically created. The research results showed that building regional forest resource management information system could be used in management decision-making of forest farms and bureau, according to its functions such as displaying, cartography, dual-comprehensive querying of spatial and attributed data, GPS positioning, statistic analysis, and update of resource data. As a result, traditional approaches of forest resource management were updated and realized modernization of forest management in deed for state-run forest farm. The system can provide stable basis for reasonable forest management and methods of sustainable forest management and classification management. The procedure of building the forest resource management information system and some key techniques and principles will provide a reference and technical basis for relative research.
