The effects on wind and microclimate of Populus popular's farm-shelter forests that were afforested by ways of planting and sprout seedling in Hetao-irrigated region were investigated. The growth of Populus popular's that were afforested by ways of planting and sprout seedling was compared. On the basis of thought of protective benefits, water consumption and salt accumulation, ecological benefits of Populus popular's farm-shelter forests that were afforested by ways of planting and sprout seedling were studied. The results are as follows: wind speed was decreased effectively in Populus popular's farm-shelter forests. And the variance between the effects on wind of different afforestation ways was not obvious. Coefficient of decrease in wind was the largest in 2H. Microclimate was improved and soil evaporation was reduced effectively in Populus popular's farm-shelter forests. Ecological benefits of farm-shelter forest that were afforested by way of planting were larger slightly than that of coetaneous farm-shelter forest that were afforested by way of sprout seedling.
