Lily varieties belonging to Asiatic hybrids, Oriental hybrids, Longiflorum hybrids, L/A hybrids and two wild varieties, respectively, were selected for hybridization. Investigation on characteristics and examination of pollen vitality, cross experiments and culture of the filial generation were conducted. The results were as follows: 1 The results of investigation on characteristics showed that Asiatic hybrids had short growing period, good sturdiness of stem and keeping quality, abundance of color, but they had high susceptibility to lacking light; Oriental hybrids had big flower, beautiful type of flower, good scent, lower susceptibility to lacking light, but they had singleness color and long growing period, sturdiness of stem and keeping quality poorer than both Asiatic hybrids and Longiflorum hybrids; about growing period, Longiflorum hybrids was middle one, they had good sturdiness of stem and keeping quality, lower susceptibility to lacking light, but they had singleness type and color of flower. 2 The pollen vitality were examined by two methods, one was the method of dyeing; the other was the method of germination. The results which used method of dyeing showed that pollen vitality of wild varieties was the highest, pollen vitality of Oriental hybrids, Longiflorum hybrids and Asiatic hybrids in turn; pollen vitality of L/A hybrids was the lowest. The results which used method of germination showed that pollen vitality of wild varieties was the highest, pollen vitality of Longiflorum hybrids and Asiatic hybrids in turn; pollen vitality of Oriental hybrids was the lowest. Mean while, combined with the results of crossing experiments, the method of dyeing was a simple way which can provide basic things about pollen vitality, but cannot illustrate the vital power of the pollen completely; it needs to be combined with the method of germination. 3 The method of cut-style pollination was used in the cross experiments. The results showed that the crossing combination of Oriental hybrids (♀) ×Asiatic hybrids (♂) and Longiflorum hybrids (♀) ×Asiatic hybrids (♂) were liable to success. It was showed that male parent was fit for female parent. But the crossing combination of Asiatic hybrids (♀) ×Oriental hybrids (♂) and Longiflorum hybrids (♀) ×Oriental hybrids (♂) were not easy to success, there were two reasons: one was male parent was unfit for female parent, the other was cut-style pollination was unfit for these crossing combination, must used another method of pollination to try it again. From results of crossbreeding with method of reciprocal crosses about oriental hybrids and Asiatic hybrids, we can find select crossing combination was a most important thing in crossbreeding. 4 The results of culture of the filial generation by different culture method, different culture medium; different harvest time showed that embryo culture was a better way for hybrids culture, 37 days after pollination was a best harvest time for hybrids culture, culture medium was different in different crossing combination: For White Fox ×L. regale Wils, Marrero×Mero Star, Pollyanna ×mixing-pollen, MS + 1 mg/L 6-BA + 0.1 mg/L NAA was a good medium; while for Snow Queen ×L.pumilum, MS + 0.5 mg/L 6-BA + 0.1 mg/L NAA can good for germination.
