Research of carbon storage of regional forest vegetation is a foundational work to understand the carbon storage at global level. Hunan province locates in sub-tropical and there are abundant forest vegetation types. Its very important to study the carbon storage of forest vegetation. The carbon concentration in stem, skin, branch, leaves and roots of 11 kind of trees, shrub and bamboo was investigated. The significant difference of different organ of each type of trees and the same organ of different trees was also analyzed. The result showed that: the carbon storage was 52.44-60.40% for stem, 38.40-58.82% for skin, 49.54%~56.24% for branch, 42.80-62.06% for leaves, 51.32-57.79% for root. Variance analysis, result revealed that there were no significant difference between stems' carbon concentration, but the different carbon concentration of skin, branch, leaves and roots between different forest types was significant. Except for the shrub and the bamboo, there were significant differences of the carbon concentration in different organs in every trees species. The carbon concentration of the Cunninghamia lanceolata, pine, broad-leaf tree, shrub and bamboo in research respectively were 54.70%, 56.97%, 55.21%, 54.17% and 52.69%. The carbon storage and density of forest vegetation in Hunan Province were estimated based on the data from the fourth forest resource inventory (1990-1995) and the measured biomass equation of different forest categories, The carbon concentration were the value of 0.5. The result showed that the total carbon storage and the average carbon density of forest vegetation in Hunan accounted for 173.94 Tg and 15.88 t-hm~2 respectively. Among 14 prefectures, Huaihua possessed the largest carbon storage of 31.047 Tg. The carbon storages of forest vegetations in Yongzhou, Chenzhou and Shaoyang ranked in the next three places with the values of 21.527, 19.306, 19.239 Tg respectively. The average carbon density in different prefectures ranges from 12.01 to 17.95 t-hm"2. In terms of forest categories, Cunninghamialanceolata forest has the highest carbon storage of 51.588 Tg , occupying 29.65% of the total carbon storage in Hunan. The broad-leaf forest has the highest carbon density of 32.45 t-hm"2, which is 2 times as many as the average value of carbon density in Hunan.The comparison was made for the carbon storage derived from the measured carbon concentration of each tree species and the carbon storage estimated using 0.5 as carbon concentration. The results showed that the carbon storage of forest vegetation in Hunan was 196.252 Tg, which was 22.278 Tg more than the data resulted from 0.5 as carbon concentration. The carbon storage of Cunninghamia lanceolata, Pine , broad-leaf respectively were 56.439, 32.855 and 47.896 Tg . The average carbon density of forest vegetation in Hunan was 17.916 t-hm "2. The average carbon density in different prefectures ranges from 13.389 to 20.256 t -hm"2. The result of the 4th time of forest resource inventory in 1999 show that the carbon storage of the forest vegetation in 1999 was 203.49 Tg. During 1995 and 1999, the carbon storage of Cunninghamia lanceolata, increased by 12.520Tg. And the average carbon density changed to 24.077 t-hm"2. But the carbon storage of pine decreased by 5.120Tg and the average carbon density increased , varied from 11.638 t-hm"2 in 1995 to 12.731 t-hm"2 in 1999. The carbon storage of broad-leaf fell, decreased 6.776 Tg than that of 1995, but the average carbon density increased to 40.183 t-hm"2, increased 4.356 t-hm"2 that that of 1995. The carbon storage of economic forest did not vary significantly, decreased 0.124 Tg only. The carbon storage of the shrub in 1999 is 23.400 Tg, which is 1.708 Tg more than that of 1995. The carbon storage of bamboo from 14.765 Tg in 1995 increased to 18.805Tg in 1999, the carbon density is 36.024 t-hm"2, which increased 13.314 t-hm"2 than that of 1995.In order to improve the accuracy of estimation of the carbon storage at larg e scale, some points should be taken into account: (1) Th...
