Taxus. chinensis var. mairei ,Cephalotaxus fortunei Hook.f are important medical species .Provenance trails of Taxus.chinensis including 27 seed sources fron 10 provinces and of Cephalotaxus fortunei including 25 seed sources from 11 provinces ,located at Chun'an and An'ji of Zhejiang and Mingxi of Fujian,was used to study seedling geographic differentiation and geographic wariation pattern for seedling growth,morphology and physiological etc Characteristics. By means of the result,select some fast-growing provenances, demonstrate the effect of light envirment ,fertilization etc on growth and physiological charater and the physiological mechanisms of dormancy-breaking for Cephalotaxus fortunei seed by low temperature, in detail to provide theoretical basis for high-output management of short-stage medical trees of the two species.The results from provenance seedling trails of T.chinensis at Mingxi of Fujian and Chun'an of Zhejiang indicated that there existed significant differences among provenances for seedling traits including seedling growth, shoot elongation parameters, branch character. The increase of provenance seeding height was attributed to the acceleration of total linear growth (TLG), maximun growth rate (MGR) and linear growth rate (LGR), but the prolongation of linear growth day (LGD). It was found that there existed significant provenance by site interaction and small provenance by shading interaction. The geographical variation patterns of Taxus chinensis var.mairer seedling height and root collar diameter were different in various seedling raising site. It was found by study of the seedling at Chun'an that there were obvious provenance differences for dry matter accumulation, chlorophyll a, b and the total content, photosynthesis rate with different geographical genetic variation pattern. Dry matter was found to be certainly and negatively related to the altitude and longitude of its seed source,there were no obvious geographical variation pattern for chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate. The provenances with more chlorophyll had higher photosynthesis rate and greater dry matter accumulation. There existed great effect of light environment on photosynthetic character of seedling, the change of chlorophyll content of provenance seedling at various growth stage was varied with light condition.The results indicated that there existed significant differences between provenances for growth performance at young stage.
