The biomass and carbon storage of poplar plantation (Populus deltoids Bartr. CL. 'zhonghan17') in the Dongting lake, China, were studied based on sample tree survey method。According to building model based on Relative growth method and data analysis, we finded the better model equations of biomass and carbon storage of poplar plantation. Some basis data and results have been alsomade useful for choosing clones and forestry management. Some main conclusions were as follows:The 11 years old poplar was the best use of poplar plantation in the Dongting lake, while the 5-7 years old poplar wasn't appropriate use because it was growing season.The biomass-both individual poplar and poplar plantation in Dongting Lake-was as increased as the forest age and DBH. And the biomass variation was different according to different forest age. For 5-year,7-year,9-year,11-year and 13-year old poplars, their biomass variation was same, which was trunk> branch> root> leaf; while for 15-year old poplars, its biomass variation was trunk> root> branch> leaf. For different forest parts, their biomass was different according to different forest age. Take leaf and branch as an example. Their biomass variation of poplars was 13-year old> 15-year old> 11-year old> 9-year old> 7-year old> 5-year old. Furthermore, the biomass was also affected by the DBH. Under the condition of 6.97cm,10.50cm, 15.37cm,18.20cm,27.47cm and 32.63cm average DBH, the biomass variation of poplars was trunk> branch> root> leaf; while if the average DBH were resp.24.63cm, 36.87cm and 40.60cm, the biomass variation of poplars was trunk>root> branch> leaf. Different root was of different biomass, which varies in following hierarchy:rhizome> big root> small root.Generally speaking, the variation of carbon storage of poplar forest was as same as the biomass's. And the carbon storage was 1/2 as much as the biomass. The article also proved the coefficient value between biomass and carbon storage was about 0.5. The carbon storage of poplar plantation was also as increased as the forest age and DBH. For 5-year,7-year,9-year,11-year and 13-year old poplars, their carbon storage variation was same, which was trunk> branch> root> leaf; while for 15-year old poplars, its carbon storage variation was trunk> root> branch> leaf. But as for tree part, such as trunk and root, their carbon storage variation was directly related to the forest age. The older the forest was, the more the carbon storage was. But as for the forest part-leaf and branch, their carbon storage variation was different, which was 13-year old> 15-year old>11-year old> 9-year old> 7-year old> 5-year old. The carbon storage was also affected by the DBH. For example, if the forest was of resp.6 cm,10 cm,14 cm,18 cm,24 cm or 32cm DBH, the variation of carbon storage of individual poplar forest was trunk> branch> root> leaf; while if the DBH were 28 cm,36 cm and 40 cm, the carbon storage variation was trunk> root> branch> leaf. Different root was of different carbon storage, which varies in following hierarchy:rhizome> big root> small root.
