Root-cutting (0,1/3,1/2 and 2/3) were applied to four-year seedlings of Agapanthus praecox ssp. orientalis to study the change of the flowering process, the quality of flowering, the photosynthetic characteristics and the physiological characteristics. These results can be summarized as followed:1. The flowering process have changed dramatically. The squaring period, the Initial flowering and the full flowering of the root-cutting were obviously earier than the no-root-cutting. The average flowering significantly extended. The influence to the squaring period, the initial flowering, the average flowering and flowering rate were different. With comparison to no-root-cutting, the squaring period of the three root-cutting treatments were earlier by 5 days, 7 days and 1 day; Initial flowering were earlier by 5 days,7 days and 2 days; And the average florescence extended 5 days,6 days and 3 days; The flowering rate increased by 15%,15% and-35%. The overall effect of 1/2 root-cutting was best,1/3 root-cutting less, the treatment effect two-thirds treatment effect increased the worst. These suggested that proper root-cutting treatment can make Agapanthus in advance of the flowering process, and extend the average flowering, viewing quality produced positive influence.2. The treatments of root-cutting had significant influence to the flowering quality. The average scapes height, the number of plant flowers and flower diameter size had a significant increase. The average height of scape increased by 25.6 cm,32.2 cm and 13.4 cm than CK. The average number of flowers per plant enhanced by 20.4,21.4,10.8 duo. Overall, after different degrees of root-cutting, the quality of flowering was G2>G1>G3>CK. These showed that appropriate root-cutting can accumulate more, make scapes soldiered, flower diameter larger, inflorescence full, and ornamental effect was better. Root-cutting treatment can improve the quality and the ornamental value.3. Compared with CK, the trends of chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, the intercellular CO2 concentration on photosynthetic index changing with time were basically the same. But there were some difference between the different root-cutting treatments. They were significantly lower than the control in the initial period after root-cutting. With the restoration of root structure and function, all photosynthetic parameters rose. In the late root-cutting, all indicators were higher than control but the intercellular CO2 concentration.4. After different disposal of root-cutting, especially floral organs differentiation, leaves and stems of soluble sugar content of soluble sugar have been significantly increased at all times, but the vegetative growth stage of G3. With the large number of flowering, stems of soluble sugar significantly reduced in the florescence and the end flowering. But stem soluble sugar content of G3 was higher than that of G1 and G2 in the florescence and the end flowering.Compared with the control, starch content of leaf was significantly improved after root-cutting, most obvious in floral organs differentiation and the initial flowering. And also starch content of stem was significantly improved after root-cutting, most obvious in florescence. The starch content of leaf and stem after different root-cutting showed some differences at different times. From vegetative phase to the flowering, leaves and stems of starch content of G3 were lower than that of the G1 and G2,The soluble protein of leaves had significant increase at floral organs differentiation, but there were not difference during the others phases, which among 6~7mg·g-1 FW-1. The soluble protein of stems which treated by G1, G2, and G3 were increased than CK during the five phases except floral organs differentiation, but the difference were not significant.5. The soluble protein and starch were t had high significant positive correlation during the average florescence, vegetative phase, floral organs differentiation and initial flowering. The differences between floral number and soluble protein of leaves and stems during vegetative phase, floral organs differentiation, initial flowering. Then significant positive diffenrence were also between the scape height and starch of leaves and stems during floral organs differentiation. However, the flowering rate were significant negative correlation and soluble protein, sugar and starch during full and end flowering.
