Througth analyzing the geographical environment of Gansu Province,the different planter pattern of potato and the problems existing in the small potato digger, the small plots of potato planting,more sloping field , less plain field, low level of mechanization was obtained. For a long time, potato digging mainly depend on man hand or animal power in most area of Gansu province, the proportion of harvesting with machine is very small, only 26,700 hm2, occupying the 5% of potato sowing area of Gansu Province. Variety of existing potato digger, but the most harvest is not suitable for small plots and level terrace of the operation, which seriously restricted the development of the potato industry of Gansu Province.Therefore, to satisfy the requirements of the potato industry, after considering the potato planter of Gansu Province ,the ownership of existing tractor (2008, Gansu occupy tractor 153 628 units), the advantage and disadvantage existing in the present small potato digger and referring to the advantage of foreign potato digger. The potato digger supporting with tractor suitable for the ridge pattern of potato in Gansu dry farming area was designed. Mainly research the following aspects:(1)The function and the whole structure of digger was determined based on the design requirements of potato digger(2)A fence-like digging shovel was desigened by analysising the type and function of the digging shovel and performance of the existing digging shovel,(3)A type of separation device with separating wheel was designed after comprehensive consideration of the kind ,the function ,the advantages and the disadvantages of existing potato digger .The key parameters of separation devices was defined through the theoretical analysze and calculation; the diameter of separation wheel is 270mm,the length of separate fillip is 80mm.(4)The dynamic drive scheme was determined and key components was designed and theoretical calculated by combing the speed of separation device ,the position and speed of output shaft of tractor power(5)the prototype three-dimensional solid model was set up in the PRO / E and it was changed into two-dimensional graphics, prototype was trial produced (6)The main factor of the damage rate and obvious rate of the prototype (separation wheel speed, the length of digging shovel, longitudinal distance between shovel shaft and separation wheel axle) was experimented by Orthogonal design method show that the optimal operating parameters as follow, the separation of wheel speed is 140r/min, the length of digging shovel is 480mm, longitudinal distance between shovel shaft and separation wheel axle is 300mm.
