With the adjustment of authorized size and system of the PLA, the number of the soldiers was cut down again. The soldiers guarding important military goals such as logistic base, hole store, warehouse and station decreased, so the role of military dog is more and more important. Replacing guard with dog and assisting guard with dog played un-substitutable effect. With the increasing of military dog number in basic units, requirement for dog and materialization of efficiency, the development of science, normalization and standardization in military dog bases was enhanced and promoted. Some new problems, new puzzle and new opportunity appeared in feeding and canine disease prevention. In order to surround the central work of dog training and using further, and increase the ability of logistic guarantee, it is particularly important to re-orientate the work of military dog raising and canine disease control, investigate and summarize new ideas and new methods which is suitable for the current development of the military dog bases. The characteristics and reasons of current existing problems were summarized in this paper by investigation on feeding and management of about 15,000 military dogs in 10 military dog bases in the past 5 years. Combining practical work experience, the main existing problems were pointed out by the author as follows: 1) The raising density was too heavy, and the canine house was too crowded; 2) Canine food was various, but nutrition requirement and safety could not be guaranteed; 3) The feeding mode conflicted with practical work and the arrangement was unreasonable. The investigation on disease situation of military dogs showed that, in recent 5 years, the incidence of infectious disease of military dogs decreased; the incidence of digestive system and dermatosis lacked obvious rules; nutritionally metabolic disease occurred sometimes; the incidence of training relating disease increased slightly in recent 3 years. Statistical results also showed that 1) Inoculating high quality vaccine could not effectively reduce the incidence of canine infectious disease; 2) There was no obvious relationship between food type, feeding mode and digestive tract disease; 3) The occurrence of dermatosis and nutritionally metabolic disease was relatively close to canine food. As how to strengthen the work of military dog feeding, management and canine disease control, three improving measures were put forward: 1) Decrease quantity, improve quality and reduce raising density; 2) According to the breed trait of military dog, adopt suitable feeding mode; 3) Strengthen canine disease control with pertinency. Two proposals were also suggested: 1) Change thinking and idea, and reinforce scientific management to military dogs; 2)Increase the content of science and technology, and go socialization way.
