Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium faberi which have the highest economic valuein present market are the major orchids planted in Jiangsu Province and ZhejiangProvince of China. However, compared with cattleya, they are severely underdevelopedno matter in cultivation technology or in production scale. Based on Cymbidiumgoeringii and Cymbidium faberi as the experimental materials, this article aimed toobserve the growing and developing trends of Chinese orchids' leaves and flower stemsin Nantong City, to study the impact on Cymbidium faberi from different groundsubstances and to, at the same time, investigate the status of Chinese orchids' yield andprogress in Nantong. The results were as follows:1. In Nantong area, the florescence of C. goeringii usually focused on the periodsfrom the end of February to the beginning of April, and that of C. faberi was from theend of March to the middle of April. Although the growth curves of their leaves andflower stems presented the shape of 'S', there were obvious differences among differentspecies and cultivars. The rapid growing period of spring bud in C. goeringi was fromthe middle of April to the last ten day in June while that in C. faberi was from the middleof April till the middle of July; and C. goeringii's Autumn bud developed dramaticallyduring the beginning of October to the middle of December whereas that of C.fabericommenced from the beginning of October to the last ten day in December. The rapidgrowing period of C.faberi's leaves was longer than that of C. goeringii's, which, perhaps, was the fundamental reason that C.faberi'plant was taller than that C.goeringii's. C.faberi's and C. goeringii's flower stems were both unearthed at the end ofOctober, nevertheless C. goeringii's flower stems entered into slow growth periods at theend of January and C.faberi's didn't begin till the end of February. Accordingly, thegrowing period of C.faberi's flower stems was about one month longer than that of C.goeringii's.2. The appropriative growing material for orchids had excellent permeability and water retention capability. The experiment testified that it was the ideal ground substancefor cultivation. With the help of it, the breeding ratio of orchid's new sprouts and thecondition of its new root were the best. Sphagna had strong water retention capability, which was beneficial to the growth of orchid's root, while its effect to the livingcondition of new leafwas inferior to that of orchid' specific growing material. Theautogamy substance had superior permeability than leaf mould owning to the vermiculiteadded into it. As to brickbat crumb, it had the lowest effect to the living condition oforchids due to its poor water retention capability.3. In Nantong, the production of the Chinese orchids mainly concentrated onChongchun district usually in the form of private planting. The major three species wereC.goeringii, C.faberi and C. ensifolium, especialy focused in C.goeringii and C.faberi fortheir bigger amount. The cultivars were based on traditional kinds. C.goeringii wereusually consisted of plum-petaled, lotus-petaled, narcissus-petaled and odd-petaledorchids and etc, maximized in plum-petaled one. C.faberi included plum-petaled,lotus-petaled, bamboo leaf-petaled orchids and so on, among which plum-petaled,lotus-petaled enjoyed the majority in number.4. According to the data of Chinese orchids in Nantong market from 2001 to 2006,the price of C.goeringii remained steady with little growth and the price of C.faberi keptthe increasing trend wholly.
