As a traditional crop, oat is talent showing itself from other crops, to achieve harmony and unification with farming and animal husbandry production and the process of improve the eco-environment. By using the experience of the concept and the principle of American System CROPMAP, we collected the environmental condition and the data correlated to oat. We attempted to use GIS as the major technology instrument, commenced from regional weather, terrain, and soil data to establish cropmap of oat in China. We probed into the potential areas which were suitable for planting oats, and analyzed the adaptability of areas for planting some varieties of oats. The conclusion we made might play a part in the practical productions. We built up the environmental database by using GIS-based spatial distribution models, which would be used to distill, calculate and assess regional weather, terrain, and soil data in either scale. Based on the databases and conditions of areas of planting oats, we probed the potential distributing area for oat by using ARCMAP module. The results of this research gained that 205, 730, 000 hectares areas were suitable for oat planting, overlaying with 926 countries in 19 provinces. According to the standards in the Secondly General Survey of Soil in China and the data of soil nutrient, we had got the data of levels of fertile soil all over the country. To combine the data of growth with environmental conditions in the database, we had analyzed and got the adaptable areas of 21 varietals, which were suitable for planting oats. The results show that: 1) oat, as one type of forge, is of great potential to plant in China and especially in the high elevation cold area of northeast and northwest of China, and 2) some oat varietals, with extensive adaptability, can be spreaded with large-scale areas.
