Karyotype analysis was carried out on chicken, quail and chicken-quail hybrids using the embryo and the peripheral lymphocyte culture techniques. G-bnaded patterns were obtained with trypsin and Giemsa. It's the first time to research the karyotype and G- ,C-banded patterns of Chicken-quail hybrids in china. The results were as followed.1. Suitable conditions of peripheral lymphocyte culture, G banded and C banded were found out on Chicken, Quail and their hybrids.2. Chicken and quail had a diploid number of 78, with 10 pairs of macrochromosomes including the sex -chromosome and 29 pairs of microchromosomes. But their positions of centromere of macrochromosomes were different from each other.No.1 chromosome was metacentric, while that of quail was submetacentric. No.4 chromosome was submetacentric, while that of quail was subtelocentric. Besides. No.6,8,W chromo -some of chicken were submetacentric, metacentric, metacentric, repectively, whereas those of quail were all telocentric.3. The diploid chromosome nunber of chicken-quail hybrids is 78. These chromosomes consist of 10 pairs of macrochromosomes and 29 pairs of microchromosomes, and the sex chromosomes type is ZZ(♂) /ZW(♀). The karyotypes of Chicken-quail hybrids were similar with chicken and quail.4. Analysis of G-banding patterns for the former 10 pairs of chromosomes of the three breeds indicat that the G-banding patterns were quite different. The macrochromosomes of Chicken were divided into 32 zones and 155 bands; while quail was 28 zones and 138 bands. Analysis of G–banded patterns for macrochromosomes of them indicated that there was great diference between No.1 and No.2 chromosome, which could be explained by pericentric inversions.5. Being treated by C-banded technique, a totally dark-stained and easily indentified W-chromosome always shows up in the female metaphase configuration, It proves furtherly that C–banded technique is an effitive approach in avian sex indentification. In the words , the Karyotypes between chicken and quail had many differences in macrochromosome , their hybrids could not propagated.
