The Mass Customization (MC) is a kind of production pattern that aims at providing customized products with high efficiency and the lowest cost of mass production. Product fast configuration design plays an important role in market competition which can provide various products quickly to meet customers' personal needs. Supported by National Science Foundation of China(50375146), the Doctoral Program Foundation of Ministry of Education of China(20040337002) and the International Cooperative Program of Ministry of Science & Technology of China (2005DFA70380), the paper researches deeply on Small Agricultural Machinery's (SAM) fast configuration theory and method: constructs the template system of SAM product family based on object-oriented representation and hierarchical classification, uses oriented graph to express the template information and structure, and realizes product innovative design and fast configuration design with the variation of isomorphic graphics. Moreover, a three-stage configuration model described as 'Case-based Reasoning (CBR)—Template—Rule-based Reasoning (RBR)' has been established. Based on the typical examples of SAM products, a prototype configuration system of SAM using graph template technology is developed.The first chapter of the paper introduces the research statement and open question of SAM product at first. Then, the product configuration design is proposed to solve the fast configuration and the personal requirements problem of SAM manufacture under MC. After analyzing the progress and application of MC technology and configuration design, the research content and the frame of dissertation are presented.In the second chapter, a concrete module partition of SAM serial product and its structure are discussed under the method of modularity design. Besides, the Product Template technology has been brought in to support the SAM modularity design. Depending on the approach of object-oriented representation and hierarchical classification the template system of SAM product family is constructed.In the third chapter, aims at resolving the limitations of current configuration design method and Engineering Template technology, the fast configuration design method based on template has been researched. The idea of using oriented graph to express the template information and structure is proposed, and the way to realizing product innovative design and fast configuration design by the variation of isomorphic graphics has been given out. Finally, the concrete process of product fast configuration design based on "Case-based Reasoning (CBR)—Template—Rule-based Reasoning (RBR)" configuration model and template technology is built.In the fourth chapter, according to the SAM character, a case library organized by relation model has been built, and a case matching algorithm based on the character similarity is proposed. Moreover, the configuration method baesd on knowledge representation and Rule-based Reasoning (RBR) has been studied and a configuration rule library verified by directed hypergraph is built too.At last, a real SAM configuration system using above methods and theories has been developed. Based on SQL-server 2000 database and Visual Studio.NET development environment, the software system can give out the schematic of virtual SAM product quickly and response rapidly to the customer's specific requirements, the test result shows that it's a feasible way to realizing the rapid configuration of SAM product.
