Objective: To discuss the morphologica diversity, genetic diversity and medical quality of 25 populations of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge that collected in three main productive areas in Shandong, try to find out the state of its germplasm resources, and collect fine germplasm.Method:The research methods refered to botany, pharmacognosy and biotechnology. We observed the morphological characters of different populations ,and measured their height, diameter, length, et al. The diversity of flower colour were indicated by pigment contents in corols, and the morphological characters were analyzed by variance test, correlation analysis , principal component analysis, cluster analysis. AFLP was used to analyze the genetic diversity by cluster analysis. The quality of different populations were judged by the contents of tanshinoneâ…¡A and salvianolic acid B which determined by HPLC.Results: There were different with morphological characters among populations, but the diversity in different productive-areas was not so. There was certain correlation to morphological characters among populations. The height of plants, diameter of stems, diameter of roots, height of roots and the number of branches were most significant for identifying morphological characters.The number of branches and flowering woods could be used in shape classification. According to the genetic aspects, there was a certain genetic distance between Salvia miltiorrhiza bge. f.alba and Salvia miltiorrhiza bge, the genetic distance of the intermediate-coloured ones was between purple and white. The genetic distances of same color germplasms cultivated in different areas were far. For the content of tanshinoneâ…¡A, salvianolic acid B, in roots,there was a significant difference among germplasms.Conclusion: Using the content of three kinds of pigment, carotenoid, flavonoid and cyaniding as flower color, it is a more precise and quantifying method to describe the flower colour. The germplasms showing different flower color exsited certain genentic distance. Productive areas affected the genentic character greatly. The germplasms with lower height of plants, smaller dimeter of roots, white-coloured had higher tanshinoneâ…¡A, salvianolic acid B content, and better quality.
