The hammer is an important and rapid wear part of rubbing machine and gringder. During the working process of the rubbing machine, the hammer touches the material directly, such as straw. And the material is mainly grabbed by the edge of hammer into the breaking room and then torn into threadiness. Although the material is soft, the tangential round corner and the sectional round corner would take place on the hammer after working for a period of time. If the hammer is working under a state of no edge, its capability of grabbing and tearing the material is obviously going down.In view of the attrition form and characteristics of the hammer of tearing choppers and grinder, an experimental investigation of a new autogenously grinding hammer was carried out. The surface solid carburizing method and the corresponding heat treatments were used to enhance the quality of the hammer which was made of mild steel. That is, the metallurgical structure of the hammer edges was made to high-carbon tempered martensite. And the middle part, hammer surface, was made to low-carbon tempered martensite. As a result, the hardness of the hammer edges and the surface was obviously different. And the abrasion loss of the hammer edges with high hardness was much less than that of the hammer surface. Using Orthogonal test, the relationship among the deep of carburized layer, the hardness distribution of carburized layer and the parameters of the solid carburization process was studied.
