Cyclocarya paliurus is native to China and the sole species in its genus. Because of the multi-value including fine timber, ornamental and medical use, it is regarded as a quite useful and valuable tree species. The one-year-old transplanted seedlings of the different provenances were studied to learn their growth law, photosynthesis indexes and the content of chemical compositions in Cyclocarya paliurus leaves with the aim of selecting superior provenances/families according to the different goals. The main results were as follows:1) There were significant differences in seedling growth characters among different provenances. So did photosynthesis indexes during the same growth stage.2) There existed some variation both in the growth characters and photosynthesis indexes. However, only stomatal conductance displayed an obvious trend of geographical variation.3) The differences about the content of microelements and secondary metabolite in the different monthes for the same provenance were extremely significant. There were significant or extremely significant differences in the mean content of microelement and secondary metabolite among different provenances during the five monthes.4) There were no obvious trend of geographical variation in the content of microelements and secondary metabolite in Cyclocarya paliurus leaves.5) Superior provenances/families for the different goals were evaluated. Provenances for fine timber production: Jianhe in Guizhou , Kunming in Yunnan, Anji in Zhejiang, Lushan in Jiangxi and Zhangpu in Fujian;Superior families for timber: Jian 2, He 10, Jian 1, Yun 4, Yun 1, Yun 5, Yun 2, Lu 1, An 7 and Jian 3.Provenances for medical useness: Jianghua in Hunan, Shucheng in Anhui, Hefeng in Hubei, Qingliang mount in Anhui and Ziyuan in Guangxi;Superior families for medical useness: Jiang 1, Qing 2, Shu 4, He 11, He 2, Zhang 5, Zi 1, Lu 7, An 6 and An 7.
