Cyclocarya paliurus is native to China and the sole species in its genus. Because of the multi-value including fine timber, ornamental and medical use, it is regarded as a quite useful and rare tree species. The seeds and one-year-old seedlings for different provenances of Cyclocarya paliurus were studied to aim for selecting superior provenances/families according to the different goals. The main results were as follows:1) There were extremely significant differences in 1000-seed weight, seed size, seed diameter and seed thickness among different provenances but not the ratio of seed diameter to thickness was observed. The 1000-seed weight showed a southwest-northeast variation, while a center(crossing of 114°E and 28°N)-round variation existed at the seed size. The seed thickness was proved a south-north variation at same longitude, however, there were no obvious trend of geographical variation in seed diameter.2) There were significant differences in seedling growth characters among different provenances. So did photosynthesis indexes in the same stage. A center (crossing of 115°E and 28°N)-round variation existed at the basal diameter, which increased from the southeast to northwest, but decreased from the southwest to northeast. The leaf area was proved a south-north variation.3) There were significant or extremely significant differences in microelement content and secondaty metabolite among different provenances. The kaempferrol content showed a center (crossing of 108°E and 27°N)-round variation, with the increase from the west to east and decrease from the north to south. The polysaccharide content was proved a southeast-northwest variation.4) Superior provenances/families for the different goals were evaluated with TOPSIS. Four superior provenances were selected for fine timber, which were respectively Jianhe in Guizhou, Kunming in Yunnan, Liping in Guizhou and Anju in Zhejiang, while eight superior families were suggested, which were Kunming 1#, Jianhe 2#, Jianhe 1#, Anji 7#, Kunming 5#, Lushan 1#, Hefeng 2#,and Kunming 2#. But for cultivating medicines, four provenances were superior, which were Shexian in Anhui, Ziyuan in Guangxi, Kunming in Yunnan and Lushan in Jiangxi, together with the eight families, which were Kunming 5#, Lushan 5#, Lushan 1#, Jianhe 3#, Lushan 2#, Anji 6#, Anji 7# and Kunming 1#.
