The comparison of traditional management and improved management was conducted in Abaga Banner,Xilin Gol Leagure, where the grassland is typical steppe and grazing livestock is mainly Simmental Cattle. The baseline survey and economics analysis were used to understand the animal production and economic benefit in the households. The objective is to compare the impacts of traditional all year long grazing and summer grazing plus winter feeding on the animal production, economy and vegetation. The results showed as follows:1. The livestock-based economic pattern has been formed, the single structure is aessentially pure animal husbandry. The main source of income is animal husbandry, accounting for 90% of revenue, and the cost of animal husbandry accounted for 80%.2. Summer grazing plus winter yard feeding of the livestock has a positive effect on livestock production due to reducing liveweight loss, raising livestock gain in the experimental group comparing to control group. The liveweight loss per head in experimental group was about 212g/d less than that in control group, and liveweight gain per head in the experimental group was 44g/d higher than that in control group. And the liveweight gain per heifer in experimental group was 34g/d higher than that in the control group.3. The body score of experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group.4. The net income of summer grazing plus winter yard feeding in the experimental group was 10,000 yuan more than the traditional all year long grazing in control group. The destocking of livestock in summer and winter feeding can be benefit to economics in this area.
