Understory vegetation is a significant component of forest ecosystem, which plays a pivotal role in Liangshui Nature Reserve, the cold-temperate, broad-leaved and coniferous mixed forest with protection of Korean Pine(Pinus koraiensis)..Based on forest resource survey and plots data of 2009, the relationship of understory vegetation, terrain and stand factors was described quantitatively in species using Logistic model. And, in term of management requirements of Liangshui, distribution simulation and management system of understory vegetation combined modeling, component GIS and database technology was established. Mathematical models and GIS technology were integrated and theoretical results were therefore put into practice in the system. Hence, GIS-based distribution simulation and management system of understory vegetation in Liangshui providing scientific basis and decision support of management and ecological planning was set up. Results showed that:(1) Distribution simulation of understory vegetation in Liangshui could be achieved by using spatial analysis model based on Logistic model. The simulation results were scientific in some way with the simulation accuracy ranging from 60% to 75%.(2) The database of Liangshui, built with relational and file database and operated by SQL SEVER 2005 and configuration file respectively, could meet the requirements of the reserve and guarantee the flexibility, security and extensibility of the system.(3) With friendly user interfaces, simple operation and convenient data updating, the secondary user administration mechanism used to maintain and manage the system could fill the needs of staffs with forest farm and further ensured the security of the system.(4) Data displays, spatial query, measurement, modification and management of sub-compartment distribution map, road, river, contour map, etc, of Liangshui in different period were achieved with this system.(5) Distribution simulation models of understory vegetation in Liangshui were integrated into the system as a functional module applying spatial analysis principle and component development technology so that the system could render decision-making and management function concurrently. It is of great theoretical and practical significance for this study to provide method and scientific proof both for distribution of understory vegetation in regional-scale and decision support for forest resource management and ecological planning in Liangshui Nature Reserve.
